A man shot himself after driving through a four-way stop, hitting another car and killing a pedestrian in Hallandale Beach on Sunday night, Hallandale Police said.

Matthew Bernard Ellison, 34, of Miramar, fought with a woman with whom he was in a relationship before he took her phone and drove off in a white van, said Hallandale Police Sgt. Pedro Abut.

The woman pursued Ellison in a black Mazda SUV but lost him before he drove through the intersection of Atlantic Shores Boulevard and Northeast 12th Avenue.

He didn’t stop at the stop sign and hit a white Toyota Corolla that was driving east through the intersection. Also hit was a pedestrian, Iulian Rusanovschi, 24, of Hallandale Beach.

Ellison then pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head.

Rusanovschi was taken with critical injuries to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, where he died, Abut said.

Ellison was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he remains in critical condition.

The passengers in the white car were not hurt.

The female driver of the Mazda “is cooperating with the investigation,” Abut said.

Police were still collecting videos from surveillance cameras around the crash scene and witness testimony on Monday.

While Abut said no charges have been filed so far, that may change.
