AROUND THE HORN

-

Cardinals: Matt Carpenter homered three times and doubled twice in six innings, tying the MLB record for extrabase hits in a game, in an 18-5 rout of the Cubs. Carpenter drove in seven runs and became the 14th player with five extra-base hits in a game. The Cubs used three position players to pitch: INF Tommy La Stella, C Victor Caratini and utility player Ian Happ. Jon Lester allowed a season-high eight runs on seven hits and five walks in three innings.

Tigers: RHP Michael Fulmer went on the DL with a strained left oblique. Fulmer, thought to be coveted as the trade deadline nears, is 3-9 with a 4.50 ERA for the rebuilding Tigers.

Mets: After two months on the DL, OF Yoenis Cespedes returned — and could be shifted to first base, manager Mickey Callaway said. Cespedes has been plagued by lower-body ailments, and the move could preserve his legs . ... RHP Jacob deGrom, a trade target, said he prefers to stay with the Mets. “I want to win here,” said deGrom, whose 1.68 ERA is the best in MLB. “I hope the feeling is mutual.” ... RHP Drew Smith was called up, and INF Dominic Smith and RHP Corey Oswalt were demoted.

Orioles: The Orioles designated RHP Chris Tillman for assignment. He is 1-5 with a 10.46 ERA and hasn’t pitched since May 10 because of a back injury.

Indians: Former Padres closer Brad Hand joined the Indians and said he was comfortable pitching in whatever role the team decides. Cody Allen has 20 saves in 21 chances. “I’d like for the most part for Cody to close games for us and use Hand more in relief, fireman-type,” manager Terry Francona said.

Mariners: GM Jerry Dipoto said Robinson Cano will be used at several positions when he returns from his suspension next month. With Dee Gordon now at second, Cano could play there at times as well as at first base and DH . ... Manager Scott Servais received a multiyear contract extension. In his third season, Servais, 51, is 222-199.
