CORAL GABLES — The Miami Hurricanes have already been picked as the preseason favorite to win the ACC’s Coastal Division. Now, three of their top defensive players are earning individual conference recognition.

Cornerback Michael Jackson, safety Jaquan Johnson and linebacker Shaquille Quarterman were all named preseason All-ACC picks on Wednesday after voting by media members at last week’s ACC Kickoff.

All three earned second-team All-ACC honors after their respective performances last season, a season that saw Miami win 10 games for the first time in more than a decade and had the Hurritied canes appear in the conference championship game for the first time in program history.

Jackson, a 6-1, 205-pound senior, played in all 13 of Miami’s games last season, starting 10. He finished with 43 tackles and was with Johnson for the team lead with four interceptions. Johnson, meanwhile, started all 13 games and earned second-team All-American honors after leading

the Hurricanes with 96 tackles, including 54 solo stops. He also broke up four passes, forced three fumbles and had two fumble recoveries.

Quarterman has been a force for the Hurricanes since arriving in Coral Gables, starting every game since he joined Miami as a midyear enrollee in 2016. In his two seasons at UM, Quarterman has totaled 167 tackles, including 17 for loss. He also has six sacks, six passes defended and two fumble recoveries.

Their spots on the preseason All-ACC team weren’t the only honors Jackson, Johnson and Quarterman collected Tuesday.

All three were also named to the watch list for the Nagurski Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s top defensive player.

Boston College running back AJ Dillon was voted the preseason All-ACC Player of the Year. The Hurricanes travel to face the Eagles on Oct. 26.
