AROUND THE HORN

-

Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 10-day disabled list because of a nerve problem in the star pitcher’s neck. The team said Strasburg has a cervical nerve impingement. Strasburg did not pitch for the Nationals between June 8 and July 20 because of an inflamed right shoulder. Manager Dave Martinez said there was no timetable for his return. LHP Tommy Milone was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Strasburg’s roster spot while INF Jose Marmolejos was designated for assignment.

Cubs: The team placed 3B Kris Bryant on the DL, retroactive to Tuesday, because of his ailing left shoulder. The man who replaced him on the roster, INF David Bote hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth before Anthony Rizzo followed with a walk-off blast in a 7-6 win over the Diamondbacks.

Brewers: The team acquired two-time All-Star closer Joakim Soria from the White Sox for a pair of pitching prospects, LHP Kodi Medeiros and RHP Wilber Perez. As part of the trade, the White Sox will send the Brewers $1,064,516 to cover part of Soria’s guaranteed portion of his threeyear, $25 million contract. Soria, 34, was 0-3 with a 2.56 ERA and 16 saves this season.

Astros: The team acquired C Martin Maldonado from the Angels for LHP Patrick Sandoval and $250,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation. Maldonado, who was a Gold Glove winner last season, is also hitting .223 with 32 RBIs in 78 games.

Orioles: CF Adam Jones isn’t fretting over the possibility of heading elsewhere as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline draws closer. Jones has a no-trade clause in his contract, so a done deal isn’t done until he talks it over with his family and an agent. Jones, who turns 32 on Aug. 1, entered Thursday batting .277 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt landed on the DL with a hyperextended right knee and 3B Evan Longoria (hand, triceps) was reinstated from the DL.
