Marlins RHP Trevor Richards (3-5, 4.41 ERA, 1.46 WHIP) vs. Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez (6-7, 3.94, 1.48): Richards has compiled two strong starts in a row now, which is something he hasn’t done since the beginning of June. And depending on your definition of a strong start, that might not even be true. Still, in his last two games, against the Phillies and Rays, he’s gone a combined 12 2⁄3 innings and given up just one run on seven hits. In those two starts alone, his ERA dropped from 5.24 to 4.41. Part of that success could be attributed to simple strike throwing. In those last two starts, he threw 65 strikes in each, which is now his season-high mark for strikes thrown in a game. … 2017 was a resurgent year for Gonzalez. After going 11-11 with a 4.57 ERA in 2016, last season he rebounded for a 15-9 record and a 2.96 ERA. But this year, his ERA is back hovering around four, and his current FIP of 4.01 would be his highest since 2009. In Gonzalez’s most recent start, he went 5 2⁄3 innings but gave up five earned runs against the Brewers. In his one start against Miami, he gave up two runs in five innings.
