- By Scott Travis Staff writer

Will your school have a new principal this school year? At least 11 schools are starting the new year with new leadership.

The Broward County School Board has appointed principals for 2017-18 to replace administrators who have resigned, changed schools or gotten demoted. Replacements also have been named at two schools where the principals were abruptly removed last month.

At Indian Ridge Middle in Davie, the new principal is Ian Murray, who has most recently been the principal of Coral Springs Middle.

Former Indian Ridge principal Frank Zagari and Assistant Principal Michael Lyons were both demoted. The school district has declined to say why. Both have been placed as teachers for the new year.

Millennium 6-12 will be led by Francine Baugh, who had been principal at Deerfield Beach Middle.

Cheryl Cendan, who had been principal, was removed and then resigned after district officials accused her of running a family business at school, where students could pay to get out of class on certain days.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland is scheduled to have two

principals this fall. Teresa Hall is leaving West Broward High in Pembroke Pines to serve as co-principal with Ty Thompson. Two principals are needed, officials say, in order to run dayto-day operations while also dealing with the aftermath of the Feb. 14 massacre.

Several other principal changes are also planned.

West Broward High: Brad Fatout, who was assistant principal of Charles W. Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines, will replace Hall.

Sanders Park Elementary: Assistant Principal Karen Nesbeth-Bennett has been promoted to principal. She’ll replace Trevor Roberts, who has resigned from the district.

Pembroke Pines Elementary: Natasha Bell, who was assistant principal at Parkway Middle in Fort Lauderdale, will replace April Schentrup, who has been named to the new position of director of safety and security.

Coral Springs Middle: Assistant Principal Sara La Rosa has been promoted to principal, replacing Murray, the new Indian Ridge principal.

Westpine Middle: Christopher Johnson, who was assistant principal at Sawgrass Springs Middle in Coral Springs, will be principal, replacing Paula Meadows, who retired.

Country Hills Elementary: Nicole Ortega, who was a principal in St. Lucie County, replaces Kellee Stroup, who has retired.

Stirling Elementary: Jacqueline Pena-Arnaez. who was assistant principal at Stephen Foster Elementary in Fort Lauderdale, will replace Tamara Zaslow, who resigned from the district.

Deerfield Beach Middle: A new principal is expected to be named before the school year starts on Aug. 15 to replace Baugh, who is now at Millennium 6-12.
