A Plantation man driving recklessly behind the wheel of a black Ford Mustang in the Florida Keys on Saturday afternoon had good reason.

Turns out he was stoned, according to the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office.

Michael Allen Holt, 46, was arrested and charged with DUI and drug possession, said Adam Linhardt, a spokesman for the Sheriff ’s Office.

Deputies searched Holt’s Mustang and found marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, a digital scale and rolling papers, Linhardt said.

Deputies say Holt spoke with slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and failed a field sobriety test.

Sgt. Joel Slough was on patrol about 4:17 p.m. when he received several reports of a reckless driver heading southbound on U.S. 1.

Slough spotted the Mustang at Mile Marker 56 in Marathon, tailgating other cars.

He stopped the Mustang just south of the Vaca Cut Bridge and told Holt twice to roll down his window.

After several moments the driver’s side door opened. Holt’s movements were slow and he appeared confused as to how to roll down the window.

When Slough told Holt he smelled a strong odor of marijuana, Holt denied having drugs in his car.

Slough searched the trunk and found hallucinogenic mushrooms and more than 20 grams of marijuana in four separate containers labeled by strain: “Gorilla Glue,” “Mint Cookies” and “Orange Cookies.”

Holt was taken to jail and had not been released as of Sunday afternoon. Bond was set at $56,000, records show.
