Wake tabs Harris as most improved player

DAVIE — Defensive end Cameron Wake had an unexpected answer when he was asked Monday which young player has stood out for so far in training camp.

“I actually think Charles Harris has probably had the best offseason, not just any d-lineman but probably anybody on our team,” Wake said of last year’s first-round pick.

“He came back in tremendous shape. He’s obviously been working on his strength. He’s been working on his football and it’s showing up on tape. I think that’s definitely going to pay off when it becomes time to put these live bullets in and get after these quarterbacks. He’s made great strides and obviously the more the merrier, I’m happy for it.”

Harris, who had just 19 tackles and 2.0 sacks last year as a rookie, spoke a few days ago and credited prayer with being a big reason for his improvement.

Harris, by the way, got a few first-team snaps Monday with what could be considered as the “speed lineup.” That front four, which was employed a few times last year, features defensive ends William Hayes and Harris in the middle, at defensive tackles, and Wake and Robert Quinn at defensive ends.

The idea is to put the speediest pass rushers on the field at the same time. Miami could use any help can get in that area. The Dolphins produced 30 sacks last year, which was tied for 26th in the league.

Joseph has good day

Kicker Greg Joseph, the undrafted rookie from FAU, was 7 of 7 on field-goal attempts in Monday’s practice, including hitting a 55-yarder.

Joseph, who is battling Jason Sanders, the seventh-round pick from New Mexico, hit from 33 yards (middle of field), 36 yards (right hash mark) and 39 yards (left hash mark) in his first round of kicks.

In his second round, Joseph hit from 33 yards (middle), 41 yards (right hash mark), 44 yards (left hash mark) and 55 yards (right hash mark).

Sanders went 6 of 8 on his two field goal sessions Sunday.
