Open tryouts for G League affiliate set for Sept. 16

The Miami Heat will host an open tryout for candidates for their G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, on Sept. 16 at Ransom Everglades Middle School in Coconut Grove.

The tryout is one of two for the Heat’s developmental-league affiliate, with the Skyforce hosting such a session Sept. 9 in South Dakota, at their home arena, the Sanford Pentagon.

The open tryouts are designed to offer players an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of Skyforce coaches and Heat personnel, in order to compete to earn an invitation to the G League team’s training camp in October.

Applicants must be eligible to play in the NBA G League and are required to pre-register by submitting a registration, release and health information authorization forms along with a $150 nonrefundable fee.

The Skyforce tryouts are in addition to the G League tryout camp later this month in Chicago.

Current Skyforce guard Jalen Bradley and 2016 NBA G League champion Nigel Spikes, the former Dillard High standout, are among recent success stories for players who have made the Sioux Falls squad through local player tryouts. Bradley averaged 4.3 points in 33 games for the Skyforce last season. Spikes averaged 4.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 11 minutes per game in 2015-16, when current Heat assistant coach Dan Craig coached the Skyforce to the league title.

Sioux Falls Tryout: Sept. 9, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (10:30 a.m. check-in), with Sept. 7 registration deadline, to be held at Sanford Pentagon, 2210 W. Pentagon Pl., Sioux Falls.

Miami Tryout: Sept. 16 from, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (8 a.m. check-in), with Sept. 14 registration deadline, to be held at Ransom Everglades Middle School, 2045 S. Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove.
