Godchaux holding on to tackle job

- By Chris Perkins Staff writer

DAVIE – Monday was Day 13 of Miami Dolphins training camp, and here’s how it looked:

Stock up

DT Davon Godchaux absolutely leveled RB Kenyan Drake on a running play (safety T.J. McDonald also might have helped deliver that blow). Godchaux has been stubbornly holding the starting position he took from Jordan Phillips about a week ago, and shows no sign of a dropoff . ...

C Daniel Kilgore showed nice footwork, pulling left to create a hole for RB Kalen Ballage. Kilgore combined with RG Jesse Davis against Tampa to do good work against DT Gerald McCoy, one of the league’s best at his position . ...

The no-huddle/up-tempo offense is getting better each day. It remains to be seen how effectively it will work during regular-season games, but this is about the best it’s looked in training camp during the Ryan Tannehill era.

Stock down

K Greg Joseph, the undrafted rookie from FAU, was 5 of 6 during his two field-goal sessions, which isn’t bad. But he missed a 39-yarder. And that comes a day after rookie K Jason Sanders, the seventh-round pick from New Mexico, was 7 of 7, including a pair of 61-yarders . ...

OT Ja’Wuan James, who had a holding call against Tampa Bay, had to run a lap Monday after being flagged for a false-start penalty. While James is not in danger of losing his starting job, pre-snap penalties have been a major concern . ...

CB Cordrea Tankersley had a holding penalty a day after being demoted to reserve. Tankersley, a 2017 third-round pick, started 11 games last year but coach Adam Gase said they’ve had their “ups and downs” with him.

Camp observations

There were four skirmishes during Monday’s practice and DT Anthony Moten, who attended the University of Miami, was involved in two of them — one with RB Senorise Perry and another with C Connor Hilland. In addition, Godchaux and LG Ted Larsen got into it briefly, and so did DT Gabe Wright and Drake. The latter happened seconds after the Moten-Perry incident broke up as Wright elbowed Drake in the back in what could be perceived as a blindside hit. “It’s the dog days of camp,” defensive end Charles Harris said, adding about the fights, “but when we go into the locker room everybody is cool.” ...

The Dolphins were in full pads Monday but they didn’t tackle to the ground, which is their usual procedure . ...

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains also backedTannehill’s decision to kick Ballage out of the huddle Sunday after he missed a block. “It’s our job to put them in position to be successful,” Loggains said, “but they need to hold each other accountable and set the standard for themselves.” ...

CB Xavien Howard had an interception against Tannehill on a deep pass to WR Jakeem Grant. LB Kiko Alonso lined up across from Grant with Howard behind Alonso. Grant ran a deep out route but Howard drifted over and easily intercepted the pass . ...

WRs Grant, Albert Wilson and Danny Amendola were the starters with WRs Kenny Stills (ankle) and DeVante Parker (hand) sidelined. Amendola was in the slot, as usual . ...

Injury news

Parker (right hand/fingers) didn’t practice after being injured in Sunday’s practice. It appeared Parker landed hard after having a pass broken up by Howard. Parker landed on his right arm and received medical attention immediately afterward. He practiced the rest of the day with his right index and ring fingers taped together . ... TE MarQueis Gray (right leg), who has been battling an injury the last few days, missed the second half of Monday’s practice.
