AROUND THE HORN

-

Yankees: A day after pitching six scoreless innings, LHP CC Sabathia was placed on the 10day disabled list due to right knee inflammation. Sabathia, 38, did not complain of any discomfort following Sunday’s 7-2 win against the Rangers. The Yankees recalled RHP George Kontos and INF Ronald Torreyes before Monday’s makeup game against the Mets at Yankee Stadium, with 1B Luke Voit optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/WilkesBarre.

Indians: OF Leonys Martin is recovering from a bacterial infection that team president Chris Antonetti described as “lifethreatening.” Martin is in stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors determined Martin had a bacterial infection that entered his bloodstream and created toxins that damaged his internal organs, compromising their function. Antonetti said it was “very serious.” But he says Martin has made a lot of progress in the last 24 to 36 hours.

Royals: The Royals placed LHP Danny Duffy on the DL with a shoulder impingement. Duffy, 29, received an anti-inflammatory shot after allowing six runs in 5 1⁄3 innings in Saturday’s 8-3 loss to the Cardinals. Duffy is 7-11 with a 4.90 ERA in 25 starts. He is hopeful he will only miss one start. The team recalled rookie RHP Glenn Sparkman from Triple-A Omaha.

Brewers: Slick-fielding OF Keon Broxton was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs while RHPs Jacob Barnes and Aaron Wilkerson were sent down.

Cardinals: Interim GM Mike Shildt said RHP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season once he comes off the DL. Martinez, 26, has been on the DL three times this season.

Cashing in: A ball signed by Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, Walter Johnson, Connie Mack, Nap Lajoie, Eddie Collins and Pete Alexander on the day they all entered the Baseball Hall of Fame sold for $623,369, SCP auctions said.
