Stock up, stock down and other camp observations

DAVIE — Tuesday was Day 14 of the Miami Dolphins training camp, and this is how the practice played out.

Stock up

DE Robert Quinn gave LT Laremy Tunsil fits during 11-on-11 drills, consistently working his way into the backfield to disrupt the offense. Tunsil has been inconsistent during much of training camp.

CB Bobby McCain continued his three-day run as the starting boundary cornerback opposite Xavien Howard, and McCain’s side of the field was relatively quiet all practice. Hard to envision the Dolphins won’t continue playing McCain on the boundary and working rookie safety Minkah Fitzpatrick as the team’s new nickel cornerback.

Stock down

With Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker sidelined by injuries, nobody has stepped up as playmakers for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Jakeem Grant began training camp as one of the best receivers on the team, but he’s had a quiet past two weeks.

Stephone Anthony got demoted earlier this week, and he hasn’t exactly convinced the coaching staff they made a mistake by promoting rookie linebacker Jerome Baker.

Gabe Wright’s release opened the door for two undrafted rookies — UCF’s Jamiyus Pittman and UM’s Anthony Moten — to impress Miami’s coaches, but neither defensive tackle stood out during Tuesday’s practice. The clock is ticking on both if they want to make it onto Miami’s practice squad.

Observations

A.J. Derby, who missed two weeks of practice because of a foot injury, made a handful of catches and several nice blocks during his work with the first- and secondteam offense.

RB Buddy Howell had a nice run up the middle of the defense.

The second team cornerbacks have been Torry McTyer and Cordrea Tankersley with Jalen Davis, an undrafted rookie, working as the nickel cornerback. Maurice Smith and Walt Aikens are working as the second-team safeties.

QB David Fales connected with Rashawn Scott on a 25-yard gain after scrambling to his right and throwing on the run.

Former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas and tailback Terry Kirby attended Tuesday’s practice.

Injuries

Rookie tailback Kalen Ballage and tight end MarQueis Gray both suffered concussions during the Dolphins’ padded practice on Monday and are in concussion protocol. They’ll likely be held out of Friday night’s preseason game at Carolina.

WR Kenny Stills (ankle), WR DeVante Parker (hand), DE William Hayes (hamstring), LB Mike Hull (knee), C Jake Brendel (calf ) all sat out Tuesday’s practice.

DT Jordan Phillips (shoulder) did individual drills but didn’t participate in team sessions.
