Dalton Kent, 22, stands at his parents’ home in Port St. Lucie on Monday while talking about being shot during a video game tournament in Jacksonville. He was hit when a bullet ricocheted and hit him in the ankle.

A Treasure Coast teacher was among those who were shot and wounded Sunday when a gunman opened fire at a video game tournament in Jacksonville — killing two people and shooting at least nine others before taking his own life.

Dalton Kent, a social studies teacher at Treasure Coast High School, was shot in the leg and treated and released from a hospital before heading back to South Florida.

A statement released Sunday night by the St. Lucie County School District said:

“St. Lucie Public Schools is aware that an employee attending the qualifying event for the Madden 19 Tournament in Jacksonville sustained a non-life-threatening injury at the event. We extend our thoughts and prayers to all of those impacted by this tragedy.”

“I’ve definitely had better days,” Kent

said in an interview aired by Sun Sentinel news partner WPEC-CBS12.

Kent said he didn’t see the shooter because he was in the middle of his game at the Madden 19 tournament.

“Where I was in the room, we were kind of on the other side. I wasn’t paying attention.” Kent said.

After hearing the gunfire, Kent and those near him dove under a table for safety, but a bullet that ricocheted off something hit his ankle, he said.

Following the shooting, the alleged gunman, David Katz, 24 of Baltimore, Maryland shot and killed himself.

Some ten hours after the shooting, Kent was back home in St. Lucie County.

Using crutches and standing next to his mother, he told WPEC he plans to a few days off before returning to the classroom.
