Labor Day weekend is the secondworst for driving.
Labor Day weekend is second only to Memorial Day weekend for dangerous driving on Florida roadways, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But help is available.
Florida’s Turnpike is offering enhanced services for drivers, including extending Road Ranger hours in rural areas from 6 a.m. to midnight Monday while continuing 24-hour service in urban areas through the weekend.
Heavy traffic is anticipated at all eight turnpike service plazas. Law enforcement officers will be on duty to direct traffic during peak travel times in Fort Pierce, at mile marker 144, and Fort Drum, at mile marker 84.
The SunPass customer service hotline, 888-865-5352, will be answered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Customers can use the Virtual Hold System and have a customer service representative call them back. The call center will be closed on Sunday and Monday for Labor Day.
Customers who need to activate a new transponder or manage an existing SunPass account on Sunday or Monday, can use the SunPass website or the SunPass mobile app.
The American Automobile Association is offering drivers free towing within 10 miles in urban areas and some rural areas through the holiday weekend until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Call Tow-to-Go at 855-286-9246 and a tow truck will deliver up to two people and a vehicle home safely with no questions asked. The service is confidential.
Florida gasoline prices dropped an average four cents per gallon last week, putting the state’s current average price just four cents above last year’s average price on Labor Day, according to AAA.
