SUNRISE — St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked No. 1 in Class 7A, scored touchdowns on its first three possessions Friday on the way to a 35-6 non-district victory over Piper.

The Raiders’ defense has allowed just one touchdown in its opening two games. St. Thomas Aquinas blanked DeMatha, out of Maryland, 38-0 in Week 1.

Friday, St. Thomas held Piper to 75 yards passing and 35 rushing. The game was played with a running clock after senior running back Samuel Durkee put the Raiders up 35-0 on a 1-yard run with 6:33 left third quarter.

“We did good as a team,” said St. Thomas senior defensive lineman Braylen Ingraham, who plans to commit on Oct. 23 from among Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Miami and Oregon. “We shouldn’t have let them score.

“We’re going to get better each and every week. The defense is pretty good. They ran down the field on the second team.”

The Raiders ran the ball right down Piper’s throat on the opening possession of the game. St. Thomas put it in the end zone on nine consecutive runs, with Daniel Carter taking it over the final 3 yards.

After a Piper 17-yard punt to the 29, St. Thomas made it 14-0 on a 8-yard scoring pass from senior Curt Casteel to junior Xavier Restrepo with 4:19 left in the quarter.

Carter put St. Thomas up 21-0 on a 36-yard TD run with 11 seconds remaining in the first period. Carter would finish with 81 yards on 13 carries.

The Raiders grabbed a 28-0 lead late in the second quarter on an 8-yard TD pass from Casteel to Trey West.

There were two delays in the game. A 22-minute delay at halftime when all the lights went out at the stadium and a 30-minute lightning stoppage at the 9:08 mark of the third quarter.

Piper falls to 1-1. The Bengals defeated Miami Norland 24-21 in Week 1.

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL 42, IMMOKALEE 12: Kenny McIntosh ran for 165 yards on 14 carries and four touchdowns to lead the host Sharks over Immokalee in Davie.

The highlight of the night was McIntosh’s 78-yard touchdown run to give the Sharks their first score. McIntosh then added three more scores on runs of 1, 32 and 20 yards.
