Dodgers: Closer Kenley Jansen is expected to stay home for a key weekend series with the Rockies after a team cardiologist recommended he not travel to Denver. Twice in his career, including last month, Jansen experienced an irregular heartbeat pitching in the high altitude of Colorado. The Dodgers began Wednesday a half-game behind the NL Westleading Rockies.
Nationals: GM Mike Rizzo indicated that first-year manager Dave Martinez will return next season. “I haven’t considered any other scenario,” Rizzo said. The Nationals, expected to contend for a third straight NL East title, began Wednesday 71⁄2 games behind the first-place Braves.
Red Sox: 2B Brandon Phillips hit a two-out, two-run HR in the ninth, highlighting his season debut and capping the Red Sox’s biggest comeback of the season in a 9-8 win over the Braves in Atlanta. The Red Sox overcame a late six-run deficit to sweep the three-game interleague series between East division leaders. The Red Sox scored six times in the eighth to tie it at 7-7. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 38th save. Phillips, 37, a former high school star in the Atlanta area who played most of last season with the Braves, sat out the first half of this year, signed a minor-league contract in June and was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.
Indians: Corey Kluber became the first 18-game winner in the majors this season, striking out 10 in the Indians’ 3-1 victory over the Royals in Cleveland. The Indians moved closer to the third straight AL Central title, reducing their magic number for clinching the division to nine. Kluber (18-7), the reigning AL Cy Young winner, allowed one run and two hits in 6 2 ⁄ innings. The reigning 3 AL Cy Young Award winner was pulled after 105 pitches. Jason Kipnis had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth and two hits.
Yankees: Luke Voit hit a tiebreaking HR in the eighth as the Yankees beat the host A’s in a matchup of the top-two AL wild-card teams Tuesday night.
