Lennar expects to start building 415 single-family homes and townhouses within months on what was once a golf course in Deerfield Beach.

The homebuilder said it would be the first new master-planned community in Deerfield Beach in more than 25 years.

“It’s an opportunity to own a new home in Deerfield Beach. There are people who are going to buy our home who have never seen that in their lifetime,” said Christopher Leimbach, vice president of sales and marketing for Lennar’s Palm Atlantic Division, which includes Broward through Melbourne counties.

The community will be called Veleiros, which means “sailboats” in Portuguese, and will rise on the former site of the Crystal Lake Golf Club, around Sailboat Lake. Leimbach said the area has a high concentration of Brazilian immigrants and Portuguesespeaking businesses are nearby.

In June 2017, the Broward County Planning Council recommended allowing the course to replace its greens and fairways with up to 415 singlefamily and townhouse units. The City Commission in October signed off on the plans for 290 houses and 125 attached townhouses on the 109-acre parcel, situated west of Military Trail between Green and Sample roads.

Sales are expected to start by the end of the year, although numbers aren’t available yet, and the first buyers will be ready to move in by mid-2019. Leimbach said the entire project would take about two years to complete.

The Veleiros models will feature one- and two-story, single-family and townhome designs with three to four bedrooms.

Lennar bought the site from Hoyer Homes in March, the same time the golf course closed. Only the Deer Creek Golf Club remains in the northwest part of the city.
