AROUND THE HORN

Yankees: OF Aaron Judge had 11 at-bats in a simulated game and closer Aroldis Chapman threw 22 pitches, perhaps the last steps before both are cleared to return to full action. The team said Judge faced right-handers A.J. Cole and Chance Adams along with minor-league left-hander Phillip Diehl at Yankee Stadium. Judge is recovering from a broken right wrist suffered when he was hit by a pitch July 26. Chapman threw to Tyler Wade and Kyle Higashioka. He has not pitched in a game since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis.

Rays: Ace Blake Snell (19-5) will be seeking a major-leagueleading 20th win Tuesday at Texas. “I think it’s a huge stat for a pitcher,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Sometimes you’re at the mercy of the club, I understand that, but ultimately if you win 20 ballgames you’re going to put the club on your back and carry a lot of the load. Blake has done that.” David Price is the only Rays pitcher to post a 20-win season, going 20-5 in 2012.

Padres: Rookie Francisco Mejia is giving the downtrodden Padres a hopeful glimpse of the future. The 22-year-old hit his first grand slam with two outs in the ninth Sunday in a 7-3 victory over the Rangers. It was the first walkoff for Mejia, who was promoted from Triple A on Sept. 4. The prized catching prospect has hit three homers since then. “It’s a really special moment,” Mejia said through an interpreter. Asked what he’ll remember most, he said it would be “the energy, the moment coming into the clubhouse and having everyone waiting for me there.”

Tigers: RHP Michael Fulmer is seeking a second opinion after an MRI showed possible damage to his meniscus. Fulmer was removed after five pitches Saturday at Cleveland . He tweaked his right knee trying to field a bunt attempt. Fulmer, the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year, is 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA this season. He’s had health issues over the last couple of years, spending time on the disabled list with elbow and oblique problems.
