Music, food, change on the menu at MSD benefits

A string of events to help raise money and awareness of issues related to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland get going this weekend, beginning with #MSDCountry­Strong, a Friday concert featuring country star Justin Moore at Florida Atlantic University. Here’s a look at what’s ahead and how to help:

Boca Raton

Moore will perform No. 1 hits “Small Town USA” and “If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away” during #MSDCountry­Strong, a benefit concert on Friday at Florida Atlantic University’s Kaye Auditorium in Boca Raton. Also performing will be Wellington­raised former “American Idol” contestant Emily Brooke.

The 7:30 p.m. concert is a partnershi­p between K&J Entertainm­ent and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to “honor the heroes, the fallen, and survivors of gun violence in our schools.” The event will include a beer garden, food trucks and a mechanical bull, with riders vying for prizes.

West Palm Beach

The first of two South Florida gatherings in the nationwide Concert Across America To End Gun Violence series will take place 4 p.m. Sunday at the Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, hosted by Pastor Benjamin Carroll Jr.

Along with a lengthy list of local politician­s, interfaith religious leaders, gun-violence activists and students scheduled to take part, performers include singers and musicians Maurice Jackson, Sandra Baran, Denise Strother and Skya Johnson; rapper Godson; playwright Hallie Greene-Balbuena (“Black Wall Street”); the Hands of Worship Dancers from St. John Missionary Baptist Church and the Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Youth Choir.

Delray Beach

The 2018 HEArt Show in Delray Beach on Sept. 28 will benefit Profession­als United for Parkland, a nonprofit that advocates for mental-health services in South Florida.

Three tickets matched all the numbers from Wednesday night’s Fantasy 5 drawing and two of them were sold in South Florida while the third was sold in Southwest Florida.

All three tickets $64,273.23, according Lottery.

One ticket was sold at a Kwik Stop convenienc­e store, 4126 N 66th Ave. in Hollywood and another was sold at the Publix supermarke­t at 555 NE Fifth Ave. in Delray Beach, lottery officials said.

The third ticket matching all five numbers was purchased at a 7-Eleven along Tamiami Trail in Naples.

Parkland

The second local event in the Concert Across America series is the Actions for Change Food and Music Festival 5-10 p.m. Sept. 30, featuring Michael Franti & Spearhead, Skip Marley and DJ Sam Ronson, among many others, at the Amphitheat­er at Pine Trails Park.

Along with the music, the event includes food prepared in 30 chef tents by James Beard Award winners, a beer garden, a silent auction and a live mural painting by Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin died in the MSD shooting. Tickets cost $150, $45 ages 18 and younger. VIP tickets also are available.

The festival benefits the nonprofits MSD Shine, created by Stoneman Douglas High School drama students Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Peña to promote arts-focused mental-health programs, and Change the Ref, founded by Oliver and his wife, Patricia, to help young people work to “expose the disastrous effects of the mass shooting pandemic.” For more informatio­n, visit ActionsFor­Change.org.
