Giants: Bobby Evans was fired as general manager and will be reassigned, with responsibi­lities to be determined. The Giants began the final week of the season 72-84, their second straight losing record. Evans was hired by the Giants in 1994, became vice president of baseball operations in 2009 under general manager Brian Sabean and was promoted to GM in April 2015 when Sabean became executive vice president of baseball operations. A major-league-best 57-33 at the 2016 All-Star break, the Giants are 166-224 since.

Yankees: SS Didi Gregorius hopes to return from a wrist injury this week and start in the AL wild-card game Oct. 3. Gregobase, rius hurt his right wrist Saturday when he slid headfirst on Aaron Hicks’ 11th-inning double to score the run that clinched a postseason berth for the Yankees. An MRI on Sunday revealed a small tear. “It feels way better,” Gregorius said before Monday night’s game at Tampa Bay. “Feeling stronger. More movement. It’s a big step to go forward.” Gregorius is hitting .268 with a career-high 27 homers and 86 RBIs . ... Manager Aaron Boone said he is not close to deciding on his starter for the wild-card game from among J.A. Happ, Masahiro Tanaka and Luis Severino.

Twins: Joe Mauer’s fifth-inning single Sunday against the A’s was his 3,072nd time reaching tying Harmon Killebrew’s franchise record. Twins manager Paul Molitor said he’s been communicat­ing regularly with Mauer about his role in this week’s six-game, season-ending homestand. Mauer is contemplat­ing retirement. “We haven’t finalized how many games he will play ... and which game of this particular campaign will be his last one,” Molitor said. Nationals: Trea Turner’s steal of second base in the third inning Sunday against the Mets set the Nationals’ career record with 123. The previous steals leader since the club moved to Washington in 2005 was Ian Desmond’s 122 from 2009 to 2015. Turner’s 42 steals this season lead the majors.
