A power line maintenance crew found a cement mixer overturned with a man’s body inside in a remote area of western Broward County on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The truck was discovered before 10 a.m. flipped on the driver’s side on an east-west road in the Holey Land Wildlife Management Area, said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane.

“This accident happened 14 miles west [of U.S. 27] on that dirt road literally in the middle of nowhere,” he said.

A Technical Rescue Team had to free the body of the driver who was trapped in the wreckage.

“When it rolled over, it pinned this man between the truck and thick muck that’s out there in the sawgrass,” Kane said. “He was declared deceased when we got there.”

The direction of travel, the cause of the crash, and when it happened is unknown.

“We don’t know what the time delay was between when it happened and when these good Samaritans came upon him,” Kane said.

It’s also unknown why a cement mixer would be driving along a dirt road in a conservation area.

“There’s no construction out there that I’m aware of,” Kane said. “Maybe he was using that as a short cut.”

Two large tow trucks had to pull the cement mixer upright before the man’s body could be recovered.

His identity was not immediately released.
