Astros: Canadian prosecutors dropped a domestic assault charge against Astros closer Roberto Osuna, who agreed to stay away from the alleged victim for one year and continue counseling. Osuna, formerly with the Blue Jays, was charged with assault in May. He was suspended without pay for 75 games, and the Blue Jays dealt him to the Astros on July 30.

Angels: Two-way rookie Shohei Ohtani will have Tommy John surgery next week. The Angels confirmed Ohtani’s longexpected decision to have Dr. Neal ElAttrache perform the surgery in Los Angeles. Ohtani won’t be able to pitch for the Angels in 2019, but he likely could hit by early next season. Ohtani went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 mostly outstanding starts for the Angels, but he has pitched just once since early June. He has continued as a DH, batting .280 with 56 RBIs after hitting his 21st homer Monday.

Mets: Assistant GM John Ricco says he fully anticipates rookie manager Mickey Callaway coming back next year despite a disappointing season. Ricco might not be the one making that call, though. He has been running baseball operations along with special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya since GM Sandy Alderson stepped down in late June after his cancer returned. The Mets plan to hire a new general manager after the season . ... 3B David Wright has been reinstated from the disabled list and added to the active roster for the first time since June 3, 2016. Ricco said it’s unlikely Wright will play during the series against the Braves, who are trying to earn home-field advantage in the Division Series. The Mets don’t want to compromise the pennant race. It’s possible Wright could pinch-hit.

Reds: Hall of Famer Barry Larkin is not a candidate to become the Reds manager. President Dick Williams said Larkin, who spent his 19-year big-league career with his hometown Reds, prefers to remain in his role helping develop minor-leaguers.
