Broward Top 10

- Adam Lichtenstein

After handling Taravella on Thursday, Deerfield Beach is in the top spot of the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s high school football Broward top 10 for the second straight week. However, that could change after the Bucks take on No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday.

The top two teams have split their past four meetings, with the Raiders coming out ahead 14-0 last year.

All of this week’s games are at 7 p.m. unless noted.

1. (1) DEERFIELD BEACH (6-0)

The Bucks dominated Taravella in a 44-8 victory. Junior running back Jaylan Knighton had another great game, setting the school record with 347 rushing yards. Next: vs. No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas

2. (2) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (4-1)

Aquinas had a week off to recover from their loss to Miami Central and should come into this game healthy and fully rested. Next: at No. 1 Deerfield Beach

3. (3) AMERICAN HERITAGE (4-1)

The Patriots are also coming off a bye week. Since losing to Miami Carol City in Week 1, Heritage has given up only about 10 points per game, and Stranahan will struggle to put up points in this district game. Next: vs. Stranahan, 7:30 p.m.

4. (4) CARDINAL GIBBONS (4-2)

The Chiefs handled district rival Coconut Creek without much problem last week. Now they have an off week to get ready for a big showdown with American Heritage.

Next: Bye

5. (5) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (4-2)

After losing to Heritage, the Lions recovered with a 36-point win over Piper. Like Cardinal Gibbons, they have a week off before a big game against Miami-Booker T. Washington.

Next: Bye

6. (6) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (5-0)

The Sharks had their bye week last week, and now they face undefeated American Heritage-Delray. Keep an eye on how the offense does after offensive coordinator Nick Martinez stepped down last week. Next: vs. American HeritageDelray

7. (7) PLANTATION (5-0)

The Colonels manhandled Flanagan, winning 55-0 on Friday. Plantation’s running game looked particularly strong, scoring five times. Next: at Everglades

8. (8) MIRAMAR (2-3)

Miramar won its second in a row, recovering from its 0-3 start to the year. The Patriots shouldn’t have an issue getting back to .500 with Flanagan coming up. Next: at Flanagan

9. (9) DILLARD (4-2)

The Panthers have won three consecutive game, outscoring those opponents 106-27. Next: at Archbishop McCarthy
