Man fatally struck by Tri-Rail train

- By Linda Trischitta South Florida Sun Sentinel

A man was struck by a Tri-Rail train and died Wednesday in Pembroke Park, authorities said.

The crash between the pedestrian and the train happened about 1:30 p.m., just south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard and west of Interstate 95, authorities said.

There were 250 people aboard the southbound train and none were injured, said Bonnie Arnold, spokeswoman for Tri-Rail.

The name of the deceased man was not released, nor were details about the crash.

Passenger Keith Hollar boarded the train at 12:58 p.m. at the Cypress Creek station and was headed to Miami International Airport for a 5 p.m. flight to Jamaica, to attend a family funeral.

It wasn’t certain he would make his flight.

“I was kind of half-asleep and

we didn’t feel any kind of bump or anything at all,” Hollar said about the crash. “They made an announcement that we were stopped due to a trespasser and that someone had jumped in front of the train.”

Authorities did not confirm that the man died by suicide, and Broward Sheriff ’s detectives were investigating the death.

Passengers were taken

off the train around 4:15 p.m. and bused from the Hollywood station to the Golden Glades station in Miami, where they were to board another train bound for the airport. At about that time, northbound and southbound trains were allowed to pass through the crash site and follow their normal routes, Arnold said.

“There might be some delays because the trains are probably out of sequence, and sometimes that can cause 10 to 15 minute delays,” Arnold said.

She did not have a tally for the number of deaths from Tri-Rail crashes in 2018. Last year, Arnold said there were 17 deaths on the tracks, and that 12 were suicides.

The passenger rail service is operated by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority for riders who travel between Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
