Sun Sentinel Broward Edition

Broward Top 10

- Adam Lichtenstein

Both Cardinal Gibbons and Western picked up major district victories on Friday to seize control of their playoff fates. The Chiefs defeated rival American Heritage in a close game, and the Wildcats shut down Plantation in a two-score victory. As a result, both high school football teams move up in the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Broward top 10 this week. All of this week’s games are Friday at 7 p.m. unless noted.

1. (1) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (6-1)

The Raiders looked good for the second week in a row as they blew out Fort Lauderdale 49-0 on the road.

Next: vs. Boyd Anderson

2. (4) CARDINAL GIBBONS (5-2)

Friday’s game against American Heritage was a huge win for the Chiefs, and their postgame celebrations showed that. It’s up to Cardinal Gibbons coach Matt DuBuc and his staff to make sure the team doesn’t let up the rest of the way. Next: vs. Hallandale

3. (3) DEERFIELD BEACH (7-1)

The Bucks recovered from their loss to St. Thomas with a 21-6 victory against Stoneman Douglas. Deerfield has two more district opponents to end the season, so the Bucks can’t let their guard down. Next: vs. Monarch

4. (2) AMERICAN HERITAGE (5-2)

The Patriots were neck-and-neck with the Chiefs on Friday, and watching Gibbons celebrate on their field will likely provide motivation for the rest of the year. Heritage has a chance to rebound against Miami Jackson this week. Next: at Jackson

5. (5) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (5-2)

The Lions picked up a big win over Miami Booker T. Washington, beating the Tornadoes by a score on the road. Next: vs. Doral Academy

6. (6) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (7-0)

The Sharks continued to demolish opponents last week, defeating reigning Class 2A champions Champagnat Catholic 48-14. Next: at Archbishop McCarthy

7. (9) DILLARD (6-2)

The back-end shake up begins here, as the Panthers move up two spots after a 43-point victory over Northeast. Dillard has been on a roll since falling to Cardinal Gibbons in Week 3. Next: Bye

8. (10) WESTERN (6-1)

A two-touchdown victory over previously undefeated Plantation puts Western in the driver’s seat for District 12-8A. The Wildcats have a short week before facing South Plantation on Thursday. Next: vs. South Plantation, Thursday, 7 p.m.

9. (7) PLANTATION (6-1)

After scuffling against Everglades, the Colonels got their first loss against Western. Now, Plantation has to hope for a Miramar win over Western to force a district tiebreaker. Next: vs. Coral Glades, Thursday, 7 p.m.

10. (8) MIRAMAR (4-3)

The Patriots move down this week not because of anything they did — they picked up a good win against Hallandale — but by virtue of other teams shifting around them. Miramar has looked good, winning four straight since losing their first three games of the year.

Next: vs. Everglades.
