Cardinal Gibbons hammers Hallandale 21-0, yielding only 89 yards

Defense carried Cardinal Gibbons to the District 16-5A title as the Chiefs blanked Hallandale 21-0, Friday at home in Fort Lauderdale.

The Chiefs (6-2, 4-0) held the Chargers to just 89 total yards and provided the final score of the game on Sidney Porter’s 34-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter. The stout defensive effort more than made up for an uneven performance by the offense which squandered opportunities to push the margin out further.

Quarterback Nik Scalzo was 16 for 22 for 171 yards and two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions, one in the end zone near the end of the first half. Cardinal Gibbons was able to cross into Chargers’ territory on four drives in the second half but could manage no points.

Forest Hill coach Jude Blessington believes his Falcons still control their playoff destiny.

"I know this: We have to win tonight to keep our hopes alive," Blessington said Friday going into Forest Hill's Class 7A district tilt with Olympic Heights.

The Falcons scored the first two times they had the ball and dominated Olympic Heights 34-6 to run their overall record to 7-1, 3-1 in the district. Forest Hill's only loss came vs. Dwyer last week.

"It was a tough road [Friday night]," Blessington said. "I knew it would be. We were able to force some breaks in the second half and our offensive line really put it together in the second half.

"Now it's on to the next game. one's over with. We kept ourselves This alive for another week and that's all we want to do. Each week we want to be alive for the playoffs and right now that's still in play. We're going to have a bear of game next week because [Palm Beach] Lakes is tough as heck."

Forest Hill gashed Olympic Heights for 265 yards and four touchdowns on the ground on 46 carries.

Senior quarterback Darius McClendon led the way with 106 yards and a TD on 16 carries. Junior running back Bry'yon Jones rushed for 71 yards and two TDs.

Defensively, the Falcons forced three turnovers and held Heights' passing game to 11 of 24 for 86 yards.

Smith, Patriots roll in battle of Miramar

Sophomore quarterback Cedquan Smith had two scoring tosses in the first half to stake host Miramar to an early lead and the Patriots pulled away for a 38-15 win on Friday in the annual Mayor’s Cup game.

Miramar, winners of five straight games after starting off the year 0-3, forced five turnovers and remained alive in the in a District 12-8A race. Everglades slipped to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in district with the defeat.

Miramar coach AJ Scott said the team has gained experience since the beginning of the season.

“It took some time…and I think we learned from our mistakes,” said Scott, whose team hosts Western next Friday in a key district game. “When you are young, you got to get your head beat in a little bit and we grew up some. We have been growing up every week. Hopefully this puts us in position to do what we have to do against Western. They are trying to make history and we are trying to stop history.”

Miramar (5-3 overall, 4-1) capitalized on an early turnover to take a 6-0 lead with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter on a 9-yard scoring toss from Smith to Amir Harvey. The score was set up on an interception and 12-yard return by Jovan Robbins.

The Patriots padded the lead just before halftime on Smith’s second TD of the night on a 4-yard TD pass to Carlos Hill for a 14-0 lead. The score with just six seconds left capped a 16-play, 91-yard drive. Hill had four catches on the drive for 50 yards. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: WEEK 9
