Broward Top 10

- Adam Lichtenstein

Not much changed in the Broward County high school football landscape last week. The teams who were supposed to win did, and many did so in impressive fashion. But this week will be a different story, as several district titles can be decided.

Here is a look at Broward’s top teams as the regular season comes closer to conclusion. All of this week’s games are Friday at 7 p.m. unless noted.

1. (1) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (7-1)

The Raiders took down Boyd Anderson with little trouble. Since losing to Miami Central a month ago, Aquinas has won its last three games by a combined score of 141-12. Next: vs. Blanche Ely.

2. (2) CARDINAL GIBBONS (6-2)

Coming off an emotional victory against rival American Heritage, the Chiefs kept playing hard. The Gibbons defense held Hallandale under 100 yards of offense in a 21-0 victory. The Chiefs did struggle a bit on offense and will need to improve. Next: at Stranahan.

3. (3) DEERFIELD BEACH (8-1)

After a bit of a sluggish performance against Douglas, the Bucks were back to firing on all cylinders with a 40-0 victory against Monarch. They’ll need to keep it going, as District 11-8A comes down to this week’s game against Piper. Next: at Piper.

4. (4) AMERICAN HERITAGE (6-2)

The Patriots had no problem recovering from their loss to Cardinal Gibbons, taking down Miami Jackson by 17. They face Hallandale this week and should pick up another victory. Next: at Hallandale.

5. (5) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (6-2)

The Lions hammered Doral Academy, handing the Firebirds their first loss since August. Chaminade has been rolling since their loss to Heritage last month, and that roll will likely continue this week.

Next: at Flanagan.

6. (6) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (8-0)

The Sharks hit the road this week after another blowout, playing at Melbourne Central Catholic. The Hustlers are a decent team, so University can’t overlook them and look ahead to playing Chaminade next week. Next: at Melbourne Central Catholic.

7. (7) DILLARD (6-2)

The Panthers were off last week and have a road game against struggling Boynton Beach this week. Look for Dillard to extend its five-game winning streak. Next: at Boynton Beach, 7:30 p.m.

8. (8) WESTERN (7-1)

Following a big win against Plantation, the Wildcats beat South Plantation 37-20. A win this week will seal the district title.

at Miramar.

Next: 9. PLANTATION (7-1)

The Colonels looked much better last week than the two previous games, shutting down Coral Glades in a 40-2 victory. This week, they have an extra day off to prepare for rival South Plantation.

Next: at South Plantation, Saturday, 7 p.m.

10. MIRAMAR (5-3)

The season could come down to Friday’s game for the Patriots. A loss, and Western clinches the district. A win, and the Patriots force themselves, the Wildcats and the Colonels into a three-team points tiebreaker. Next: vs. Western.

On the bubble: Fort Lauderdale (6-2), McArthur (8-0), Piper (6-2).
