Knaus Berry Farm cinnamon rolls almost ready
The wait is almost over. In what’s become a popular fall tradition in South Florida, Knaus Berry Farm in Homestead is set to reopen Oct. 30.
Longtime fans of the farm’s sticky, warm cinnamon rolls have been asking employees on social media about the farm’s return.
“Lord willing we will reopen Oct. 30. See you soon!” a staffer replied to an inquiry.
Each spring, the 62-year-old business shuts down for the summer months and die-hard customers begin the countdown to its reopening. Insiders know to stop by a day early of the fall debut to get a whiff and a taste of the sweet cinnamon rolls. Long lines of customers usually snake around the property and onto SW 248th St. on opening day.
Workers have already begun preparations. They’ve been writing the new menu board for the rolls, milkshakes, pies and cakes on the giant chalkboard that sits above the register. This year, rolls cost $11 for a dozen, $5.90 for half a dozen and $1.25 for singles.
“I think it’s cheap entertainment,” said the farm’s head of operations, Thomas Blocher, last year as people arrived a day early to beat the crowds. “We just try to do a good job and try to make sure it’s a quality product.”
The farm has blossomed since its early days. It began as a roadside strawberry stand by brothers Ray and Russell Knaus in 1956. The farm has since grown, employing about a dozen employees in the bakery and 30 in all.
The business, located at 15980 SW 248th St., Homestead, is also social media friendly, with more than 44,000 followers on Facebook and more than 23,000 on Instagram. People are known to take selfies outside the farm or along its strawberry fields and share them widely.
