Mercantil Bank, headquartered in Coral Gables, has 15 branches in South Florida, seven estate loan production office in New York City.

Mercantil Bank has announced it is changing its name to Amerant.

Headquartered in Coral Gables, it has 15 branches in South Florida, seven in Texas, and a commercial real estate loan production office in New York City.

The name change, which comes months after approval to trade on the NASDAQ exchange, is not expected to interrupt service to customers.

“This will be a smooth and easy transition for you,” the bank says on its website.

“We are fully focused on the needs of today’s customers and wanted our brand to be a powerful word that is easy to pronounce and remember,” said Millar Wilson, CEO, in a statement. “Our new name reflects our heritage and experience, while strengthening our commitment to serving our markets and our valued domestic and international customers with an innovative and comprehensive range of financial services.”

What does mean?

“The letter Amerant A, the first letter of the alphabet, symbolizes our new beginning, an opening. It also resembles the word ‘America’ acknowledging our local experience and renewing our commitment,” according to the bank’s website.

Formerly traded under MBNAA, it now will trade as AMTB.
