South Florida Democratic lawmakers blasted President Donald Trump on Wednesday ahead of his Florida rally, saying the commanderin-chief ’s rhetoric is filled with racist code words.

Trump will rally in the Fort Myers area to support Republicans Ron DeSantis for governor and Rick Scott for U.S. Senate. The president hasn’t shied away from Florida politics, calling Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum a “thief” on Twitter.

South Florida Democrats called for the president to stop using such incendiary language, but they didn’t hold their fire. They painted DeSantis as a lapdog for the president who will work to strip Floridians of health care.

U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-West Delray, said Trump is the last person who should be calling anyone a thief. He said Trump has a long history of ripping people off through his business ventures.

“He is beyond being a con artist,” Hastings said. “He is a crook. If you don’t believe so, ask the people who went to Trump University.”

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, said the president is “debasing our public discourse” by hurling untrue allegations about Gillum, who is mayor of Tallahassee and is vying to become Florida’s first black governor.

“Using terms like these when you have an African-American candidate for governor is more dog-whistle politics,” she said.

Republicans have used an FBI investigation into possible Tallahassee corruption to attack Gillum, who has not been publicly named as a target of the FBI probe.

Documents that are part of an ethics probe into the mayor’s travels showed that he accepted a ticket to the musical “Hamilton” that came from an undercover FBI agent. Other records showed that an undercover FBI agent paid more than $4,000 for a Gillum campaign fundraiser in 2016.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, said Trump calling Gillum a thief is the latest example of racist code words used to question the success of black men.

“[Trump] goes after the Democrat like they had some beef in junior high and he wants payback,” she said.

On the day after DeSantis won the Aug. 28 primary, he told Fox News Floridians shouldn’t “monkey this up” by electing Gillum.

Race has been an issue in the governor’s election ever since. During the second and final debate, Gillum spelled the n-word on live television to highlight a comment made on social media by a DeSantis campaign donor.

As for Trump’s allegations, Gillum responded on Twitter.

“As my grandmother told me — never wrestle with a pig,” he wrote. “You both get dirty, but the pig likes it. So ignore him and vote, Florida!”

Trump is expected to hold another rally on Saturday in Pensacola.
