‘Motor’ advances on Doak Walker list
What many followers of Florida Atlantic locally have known for some time now is coming to the limelight nationally.
Owls junior running back Devin “Motor” Singletary has been named one of 10 national semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top running back.
Singletary, who led the nation in rushing touchdowns last season with 32, is once again atop that leaderboard through 10 games in 2018 with 20. He ranks sixth in rushing yards at 1,169.
The Deerfield Beach native and American Heritage-Delray product is tied for sixth on the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision’s list for career rushing touchdowns. His 64 are tied with Texas’ Cedric Benson and Indiana’s Anthony Thompson. Singletary is college football’s active leader in the category.
The other semifinalists are: Eno Benjamin (Arizona State), A.J. Dillon (Boston College), Travis Etienne (Clemson), Darrell Henderson (Memphis), Karan Higdon (Michigan), Benny Snell (Kentucky), J.J. Taylor (Arizona), Jonathan Taylor (Wisconsin) and Trayveon Williams (Texas A&M).
To determine the 2018 finalists, members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes after this week’s games. Three finalists for the award will be named Monday. The winner will be announced live on the College Football Awards show on ESPN on Dec. 6.
Doak Walker was a three-time All-America running back and 1948 Heisman Trophy winner at Southern Methodist.
The Owls (5-5, 3-3 Conference USA) play at North Texas on Thursday night, starting at 9:30 p.m.
