‘Next gen’ Cumberland Farms opening 2 S. Florida locations

- By Ron Hurtibise South Florida Sun Sentinel

The first of two “next generation” Cumberland Farms convenience stores and gas stations opened Nov. 9 in Margate, while a second is scheduled to open today in Coral Springs.

The Westborough, Mass.-based company developed the “next generation” concept to compete with rivals such as Wawa and RaceTrac that have rolled out improved beverage and ready-to-eat food choices in recent years.

The two Broward County stores, larger than the chain’s typical outlets at about 5,000 square feet, are so far the company’s only “next generation” stores slated for South Florida, a spokeswoman said.

The planned opening of the Coral Springs store on Wiles Road could be pushed back if unforeseen circumstances arise, the spokeswoman said. In late September, the company had announced the two stores would be open by Oct. 19.

They feature made-toorder beverages served on demand over a high-top bar counter, including mikshakes, smoothies, espressos, cappucinos and lattes.

Food items are heated when ordered and include breakfast and lunch sandwiches, pizza, frittatas, mozzarella sticks, macaroni and cheese bites, and hot dogs. Cold sandwiches are also available. Patrons are welcome to dine at several outdoor patio tables.

The stores also sell traditional convenience store items, such as beer, soft drinks, chips and tobacco products.
