Dietrich, Marlins part ways after six seasons
Marlins acquire RHP Anderson in trade for Schales
Derek Dietrich’s time in Miami is coming to an end.
On Tuesday night, the 29-year-old outfielder was designated for assignment by the Marlins. Under MLB rules, once a player is designated, the team has seven days for him to be traded, released, or placed on irrevocable waivers.
Dietrich, who was the longest-tenured Marlin, spent six seasons with Miami, playing in 608 career games. A versatile player who’s suited up at left field, first base, second base and third base, he slashed .254/.335./.422 for his career.
Most notably, Dietrich holds the distinction of being the franchise’s all-time hit by pitch leader. In his six seasons, he was plunked 93 times.
In 2018, the veteran split most of his time between left field and first base, hitting .265 with 26 doubles, 16 home runs and 45 RBI in 149 games.
In another Tuesday move, Miami acquired Minnesota Twins minor league pitcher Nick Anderson in exchange for Double-A outfielder Brian Schales.
Anderson — a 6-foot-5 right-hander — made 39 appearances for Triple-A Rochester this past season, finishing 8-2 with a 3.30 ERA. The 28 year old notched 88 strikeouts and 19 walks.
The Marlins’ fourthround pick in 2014, Schales spent the past year in Double-A Jacksonville, slashing .258/.354/.403 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI.
Marlins trade Peters: After being designated for assignment on Tuesday, Dillon Peters is heading to Anaheim. Miami dealt the 26-year-old left-hander to the Angels for minor league pitcher Tyler Stevens.
Peters made 11 starts and two relief appearances for the Marlins over the past two seasons, accumulating a 3-4 record with a 6.10 ERA. He played in seven games this year, making his last appearance on July 5. Peters spent the majority of the year in Triple-A New Orleans, starting 19 games.
An 18th-round draft pick out of New Mexico in 2017, Stevens has quickly matriculated his way up the Angels farm system. After splitting the 2017 season between rookie league and Low-A, he made a big leap this past year.
The 22 year old started the season in High-A Inland Empire, moved up to Double-A Mobile and finished in Triple-A Salt Lake. In 49 relief appearances across all three levels, he went 7-6 with a 5.43 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 711⁄3 innings. In that span, Stevens recorded 94 strikeouts and 24 walks.
