Dumervil recounts visit to Louisville amid 2-10 season

- By Adam Lichtenstein South Florida Sun Sentinel

St. Thomas Aquinas 2020 offensive lineman Marcus Dumervil had an interesting college trip lined up for the weekend.

The four-star offensive tackle prospect visited Louisville, which fired coach Bobby Petrino on Nov. 11. Still, Dumervil had positive things to say about his visit.

“It [went] well,” he said. “It’s [a] family atmosphere.”

The Cardinals finished the season 2-10; Dumervil saw Louisville suffer a 56-10 drubbing at the hands of in-state rival Kentucky.

Louisville has recruited South Florida hard over the past few years, snapping up many local players, including star quarterback Lamar Jackson (Boynton Beach) and Devante Peete (St. Thomas) in 2015, Anthony Johnson (Chaminade-Madonna) and Kaheem Roach (Miramar) in 2017 and Trenell Troutman (St. Thomas), Jarrett Jackson (Palm Beach Gardens) and Jordan Travis (Benjamin) in 2018. Travis announced his intent to transfer earlier in the season.

The Cardinals do not currently have any commits from seniors or juniors in Broward or Palm Beach County. Cardinal Gibbons 2019 offensive lineman Jamari Williams was committed to Louisville before decommitting and choosing Arizona instead.

‘Contact period’ starts up: Expect lots of pictures of college coaches with local football stars on social media in the next few weeks.

The NCAA’s “contact period” began on Sunday and runs through Dec. 15. During this three-week stretch, coaches can visit high school seniors in their homes or on their high school campus. This “contact period” is critical, with the Early Signing Period starting on Dec. 19.

There is another “contact period” for players who wait until February’s National Signing Day.

One of the top local prospects has already received a major in-home visit. Benjamin defensive back Kaiir Elam received a visit from Florida Gators defensive backs coach Charlton Warren.
