Volunteers get back to business in hurry

-

Grant Williams had 21 points and 11 rebounds as No. 6 Tennessee bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 95-67 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee (5-1) was playing for the first time since falling 87-81 in overtime to No. 2 Kansas on Friday at the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.

This game didn’t have nearly as much suspense.

Eastern Kentucky (3-4) and Tennessee were tied 11-all seven minutes into the game before the Volunteers scored 13 straight points to pull ahead for good.

Cavs hold on: Kyle Guy scored 18 points and No. 4 Virginia combined effective outside shooting with its usual stout defense to slip past No. 24 Maryland 76-71. The Cavaliers blew most of a 17-point lead before making six free throws in the final 37 seconds to hand Maryland its first loss.

Nun too pleased: Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt now has a little bling to go along with the international attention she gained as the near-centenarian team chaplain during Loyola’s run to the Final Four.

Loyola great Jerry Harkness, who was a member of its 1963 championship team, helped present a Final Four ring Tuesday night to Schmidt before the Ramblers’ rematch of their NCAA tournament game against Nevada.

Schmidt, who turned 99 in August, sat in a wheelchair courtside for the presentation. She joked afterward that she felt as if the ring added five pounds to her weight.

The Catholic nun became a celebrity last March for praying before each game for her Ramblers — and for their opponents.

Is this on? Learfield Sports suspended Iowa play-byplay broadcaster Gary Dolphin for two games for negative comments directed at Hawkeyes guard Maishe Dailey that inadvertently made it to the air during a break Tuesday.

Iowa announced that Dolphin, who has broadcast games for more than 20 years, will miss Friday’s game against Wisconsin and Monday’s game at Michigan State after comments aired during Tuesday’s 69-68 win over Pittsburgh.

Dolphin did not swear or use inappropriate language but sounded exasperated as he criticized Dailey for dribbling with his head down into a double team.
