A Fresco y Mas market in

Jerk chicken and oxtails will be at the ready when a Caribbean-themed Fresco y Mas market opens today in Laurderhill.

Winn-Dixie parent company Southeastern Grocers will open the new store at 1531 NW 40th Ave, its second in Broward County. This will be the chain’s 26th location, but the Lauderhill store will differ from others by offering products targeted to Caribbean customers, in addition to a lineup of Latin goods, the company said.

The company said the cafe will serve authentic Caribbean and Hispanic items, such as Jamaican patties, croquettes, pastries, drinks and sandwiches. The updated “Cocina” (kitchen) will offer daily specials of freshly prepared jerk will chicken, goat stew and Caribbean rice. Aisles will be stocked with more than 1,200 Caribbean and international products and the butcher shop will carry goat and oxtail.

The first Broward County Fresco y Mas opened in Hollywood in 2017. The chain emphasizes customer service and value with Dollar Zones carrying more than 1,000 products for $1.

There will be fun and freebies for customers at the Lauderhill grand opening ceremony at 8 a..m. Wednesday. After that, the market will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

The first 500 customers to arrive will receive a free gift card valued between $5 and $500 and a Fuel Rewards code to redeem and save 25 cents per gallon on their next fill-up at participating Shell stations.

There also will be Hispanic and Caribbean food samples, a live cooking demo, tastings by popular South Florida Chef Chad Cherry and live Caribbean and Latin music.

“We recognized a great need in the Lauderhill community for a grocery store that provides more than the traditional Hispanic offerings,” Anthony Hucker, president and CEO of Southeastern Grocers, said in a news release. “Our newest Fresco y Mas store is handcrafted with a wide selection of products tailored specifically to the Caribbean customer as a unique offering for our Lauderhill community.”

Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers, which operates Winn-Dixie, BI-LO, Fresco y Mas and Harveys Supermarket, began converting Winn-Dixies into Fresco y Mas markets in 2016. There are 22 stores in Miami catering clientele.

In March, Southeastern Grocers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and closed 94 stores, including six in South Florida. It emerged from bankruptcy in May after decreasing debt by $600 million, the company said.

As part of its new strategy, the company plans to remodel or convert 235 stores into Fresco y Mas or Harveys by the end of the year, Hucker said in a May interview with the Orlando Sentinel.

Southeastern Grocers operates stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. to
