A 20-year-old former student at Florida Atlantic University was killed by a hitand-run driver as she crossed the street Monday night near the Boca Raton school.

Asia McClave, of Lighthouse Point, died at the scene, 700 W. Glades Road, after the driver of a white or silver car, possibly a Hyundai, sped away about 7:30 p.m., police said.

“She was really an amazing young lady,” her mother, Maria Kline, said Tuesday. “She definitely didn’t think anything would ever happen to her. She was 20 and immortal.”

McClave was less than a month away from her 21st birthday and about six months into a new job with a gaming company. She was debating returning to school — she was just one semester away from earning a degree in economics — or continuing on with her new career, her mother said.

McClave last attended FAU during the 2017 fall semester, a university spokesman said.

“Our condolences to her family and friends, and we hope that the driver of the vehicle involved is quickly found,” the university said in a statement Tuesday.

McClave graduated from the Florida Atlantic University High School, a dual enrollment program on the college’s Boca Raton campus. Before that she went to the Alexander D. Henderson University School for grades K-8 in Boca Raton.

“It’s a really tight-knit community,” former English teacher Debbi Rosenblum said of the university middle and high schools. “She went to both schools, so she was a part of that community for a long time.”

Former students had been reaching out all day Tuesday, Rosenblum said, to find out about the crash that killed McClave.

“She really was just a beautiful, beautiful, softspoken girl,” Rosenblum said. “She was a great student. She was the sweetest, kindest, really beautiful girl.”

She also was an actress, starring in local independent films. McClave played the Duchess in “Guess,” “a

noir short film” that came out in 2016, according to imdb.com. McClave also appeared in the sequel “Guess Again.”

Fluent in Spanish, McClave was part Chilean and loved to travel. She and her mother had taken a summer trip to Greece and Albania. McClave toyed with the idea of becoming a lawyer and was considering taking the law school admission test, McClave’s mother said.

“She was very compassionate and loving, very soft and warm. She was a beautiful girl,” Kline said. “She was really just an amazing friend too.”

The hit-and-run driver at large.

“The vehicle, possibly a Hyundai, fled the scene eastbound on West Glades Road at a high rate of speed,” Boca Raton police said. “The vehicle is missing a side mirror and possibly has front-end damage.”

The Boca Raton Police Department urges anyone with information about the crash to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Eric Genden at 561-620-6223. remains
