Locals feel impact of reclassifi­cation

Forest Hill (8A), Atlantic, Plantation (7A) among movers

The Florida High School Athletic Associatio­n on Friday released its new classifica­tion and district assignment­s for the 2019 and 2020 football seasons.

Here is a look at the local changes in classifica­tions and districts.

Class 8A

Forest Hill moved up from Class 7A to Class 8A, joining Wellington, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Central and Jupiter in District 10-8A (formerly District 9-8A)

District 11-8A, formerly District 10-8A, shrinks to just John I. Leonard, Lake Worth, Santaluces and Park Vista after losing Atlantic, Boca Raton and Spanish River. Boca and Spanish River join District 12-8A along with Deerfield Beach and Monarch.

District 13-8A is made up of Coral Glades, Coral Springs, Stoneman Douglas and Taravella.

The final Class 8A district in Broward, District 14-8A, is made up of Cypress Bay, Flanagan, Piper, West Broward (which moves up from Class 7A) and Western.

Class 7A

Seminole Ridge moved down from Class 8A to join Dwyer, Palm Beach Lakes and Royal Palm Beach in District 12-7A. Atlantic also moved down from Class 8A, joining District 13-7A along with Blanche Ely, Olympic Heights and West Boca Raton.

Plantation dropped from Class 8A to join District 14-7A, along with Fort Lauderdale, Nova, South Plantation and St. Thomas Aquinas.

District 15-7A is the third Broward 7A district, with McArthur, Cooper City and South Broward joining Miami American, Everglades and Miramar. The latter three all moved down from Clas 8A.

Class 6A

District 15-6A remains largely the same, with Archbishop McCarthy, Boyd Anderson, Dillard and Northeast. Boynton Beach leaves the district in this classifica­tion and moves to Class 5A.

Class 5A

District 14-5A, previously a Space Coast district, moves south and now includes Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek, Jensen Beach and Suncoast.

District 15-5A, now includes American Heritage, Hallandale, Stranahan and North Miami Beach.

Class 4A

Cardinal Gibbons, the reigning Class 5A champion, moves down to Class 4A. The Chiefs are joined in Region 4 by Miami Carol City, one of the top teams in the state, which moved down from Class 6A. American Heritage-Delray moved up from Class 3A to Region 4-4A.

University School, previously in Region 4, moves to Region 3, as does Glades Central.

Class 3A

Class 3A becomes more geographic­ally aligned, with King’s Academy and Cardinal Newman leaving Region 2 and moving to Region 3.

Class 2A

The only local change in Class 2A is Westminste­r Academy moving down from Class 3A.

Class 1A

There is no local change to Class 1A teams as Pahokee remains in the rural classifica­tion.
