Gunshots were flying from an SUV into a sedan while both vehicles were driving the wrong way Monday night on a busy South Florida road.

When the domestic violence episode came to a crashing end along Atlantic Boulevard near Florida’s Turnpike, a man was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the woman driving the sedan had been shot, police said.

The dead man was Horreshia Owen Bryan, 37, of Lauderdale Lakes, Scotty Leamon, spokesman for Coconut Creek police said on Tuesday. The injured woman was not identified.

Initially, it was thought that the two motorists had been shooting at each other, but Leamon said, “The evidence indicates he was the only one shooting.”

No shell casings were found inside the woman’s car after it crashed into trees along the median of Atlantic Boulevard near the turnpike overpass, Leamon said.

Law enforcement became involved about 8:45 p.m. Monday when an off-duty Coconut Creek police officer noticed two vehicles traveling east in the westbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard, Leamon said.

The officer followed the two vehicles as they traveled into Pompano Beach and saw that the car had crashed into trees in the median and the SUV crashed toward an embankment leading to the turnpike.

“At that point what looks to be the sole occupant of that car, a female, comes up to him and says she’s been shot,” Leamon said.

Bryan, who was driving

the SUV, shot himself and was found dead at the crash scene, Leamon said. The woman was not identified by police, who said she did not have a weapon. She was taken to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach and was still there Tuesday, in stable condition, Leamon said.

The police investigation is continuing. A portion of Atlantic Boulevard near the crash scene was closed for several hours as evidence was gathered and debris was cleared.
