South Florida teenager competes on ‘Jeopardy!’

- By Johnny Diaz

School might be out for the summer but for 15 students, it’s time to play “Jeopardy!”

The game show’s annual “Teen Tournament” has started a two-week run featuring contestants ages 14 to 17 from across the country.

That includes Miami’s Lucas Miner, a junior at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove.

“We have a great cast of characters for the Teen Tournament this year,” host Alex Trebek said in a preview.

The game show will feature five seniors, six juniors, one sophomore, two freshmen and one eighth grade student.

Last year, Lucas, 17, took an online quiz to audition for the show and was then invited for an in person audition in New Orleans, according to The Miami Herald. He learned last summer that he made it on the show and taped his episode in December in California.

“I remember going to the ‘Jeopardy!’ filming and feeling how surreal it was, shaking Alex Trebek’s hand. When you look back, it’s like, ‘That really happened?’” Lucas told the paper.

In between his homework assignments, Lucas watched “Jeopardy!” and practiced using the buzzer with a pen, according to the paper.

At his school, he is a history and speaking champ. He placed first in the varsity bee of the 2018 South Florida History Bee and Bowl in November and was first in International Extemporaneous Speaking at this year’s Florida Forensic League Art Deco Region Qualifying Tournament.

Hopefully, Lucas knows his Florida trivia, too. Over the years, “Jeopardy!” has been known for presenting Florida-themed clues from a famous manatee to a Broward city with trees in its name that was named one of the best cities to live in (What is Pembroke Pines).

Lucas’ first-round episode will be broadcast tonight at 7:30 p.m. on WPLG Channel 10 in Miami and Fort Lauderdale and WPBF Channel 25 in West Palm Beach.

He and his fellow contestants will be competing for $100,000 grand prize.
