- By Johnny Diaz

The case of the prosthetic ear that was found on a Florida beach will have a happy ending.

The Holmes Beach Police Department had been looking for the ear’s owner since it was found Saturday in the sand on Manatee Beach where the “World’s Strongest Man” competition was taking place.

On its Facebook page Tuesday, the department took to social media for help. It had posted two photos of the ear with the hope that its owner would come forward.

“Have you lost an ear?” department wrote.

The post went viral, having been shared more 1,800 times with more than 150 comments with users concerned about the ear’s owner.

On Thursday, the the police department shared the good news owner had been found.

“Thank you to all who shared the missing ear post!” the department posted. Holmes Beach is a small town in Manatee County on Anna Maria Island, south of Tampa Bay and west of Bradenton.

In a comment under the original Tuesday post, the department added, “the owner of the ear was sent this Facebook Post by a friend and will be reunited with his ear!”

Holmes Beach Police Sgt. Brian Hall said a woman called about the rubber ear and said it belonged to her husband. Hall said the Beaufort couple was vacationing in the Tampa Bay area when the man went swimming. She said he was trying to put the ear in his pocket for safekeeping when “a wave knocked it off his hand.”

Police did not immediately release the name of the ear’s owner but Hall said the department will that the mail it to South Carolina.

“We will put it in box. I hope nobody sees it and freaks out,” he said.
