St. Thomas stars Dumervil, Rosemy a hit at The Opening

Dozens of the top high school players in the nation gathered at The Star in Frisco, Texas — the home of the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility — to compete against each other. Four Broward County stars were among them.

“Being in the meeting rooms and being in the facilities where pros can be, it doesn’t seem that far away,” St. Thomas Aquinas offensive lineman Marcus Dumervil said. “In a couple years, that could be me.”

Dumervil, a four-star prospect and the No. 128 player in the 2020 class, according to 247Sports’ composite ranking, was one of the standout players at The Opening, which ran from June 30-July 3. He was named to The Opening’s Final 5, a group of the top-performing offensive linemen. He attributed his success to practicing with St. Thomas Aquinas offensive Torrian Wilson.

“Going in, I was really confident with the work I put in with my offensive line coach, Torrian Wilson,” Dumervil said. “He really prepared me for top guys. I just went in, I trusted his technique, what he taught me, and I [succeeded]. It really helped my confidence.”

Joining Dumervil at The Opening were a pair of his teammates, wide receiver Marcus Rosemy, a four-star Georgia Bulldogs commit, and linebacker Derek Wingo, a four-star Florida Gators commit. Deerfield Beach running back Jaylan Knighton, the reigning Sun Sentinel Broward Class 8A-6A offensive player of the year and a four-star prospect, competed, as well.

“The Cowboys are probably one of the most well-known franchises in the world, so being in one of their facilities was really a blessing,” Rosemy said. line coach

St. Thomas is already recognized as one of the top football programs in the nation, but the three Raiders used the opportunity at The Opening to show what the current crop of St. Thomas athletes can do.

“Me and Wingo and Dumervil went out there, did our best and just represented for St. Thomas Aquinas,” Rosemy said.

Despite The Opening bringing some of the most highly soughtafter high school prospects to the same place, Dumervil said college decisions are not the most prevalent topic among the players at the camp and that players were not at the camp trying hard to recruit other players.

Rosemy said that even if they were, no one would sway him from the decision he already made.

“It’s never on my mind,” Rosemy said, “because I know nobody can make me switch schools.”
