A closely watched Atlantic hurricane forecast released Tuesday continued to call for an near-average season, with six hurricanes and eight tropical storms.

Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project released an updated forecast five weeks into the season that was unchanged from its prediction from the beginning of the season.

The forecast would represent a decrease from the eight hurricanes seen last year and a sharp decline from the 10 that raked the region in 2017. The report said the continental United States faced a 54 percent risk of a hurricane strike, near the previous century’s average of 52 percent.

“The probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the United States coastline and in the Caribbean remains near its longterm average,” the report said. “As is the case with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them. They should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted.”

The Colorado State forecast is in line with the one issued at the beginning of the season by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which called for four to eight hurricanes.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

The Colorado State report said it appeared slightly less likely that the peak season, which runs from August through October, will see the persistence of El Niño, the hurricane-suppressing warming of the Pacific Ocean. But it said Atlantic Ocean temperatures didn’t appear likely to favor an active season.
