SI swimsuit model search returns

- BY JOHNNY DIAZ

Are you the next Tyra, Heidi or Christie?

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit team will be holding a casting call this weekend in Miami Beach.

Anyone who has dreamed up of modeling swimsuits for the popular publication can attend the casting call which begins 8 a.m. Friday at the W South Beach hotel, 2201 Collins Ave.

The line though will begin forming at 5 a.m.

Professional models are asked to bring their book (portfolio) or a comp card. Novice models are also welcomed. SI editors and models will also be mentoring hopefuls at the casting event.

You need to be 18-years-old or older and be eligible to work in the U.S. It’s the second consecutive year that the in-person casting call is taking place in Miami Beach; the event coincides with Miami Swim Week which begins Thursday and runs through July 16.

Those who attend the casting call may “potentially need to be available July 12, 13 and 14.” Last year’s swim suit casting call finalists strutted in a runway show.

One of those casting call finalists was Mara Martin who walked the runway at the W South Beach while breastfeeding her baby. The image went viral.

Also last year, Miami model and Florida International University alumna Manuela Alvarez submitted a video for the Sports Illustrated audition. That eventually led to her being featured in this year’s annual swimsuit issue, according to FIU.

This year’s cover model was Tyra Banks.

(Fun fact: The first Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl Babette Beatty was discovered on Fort Lauderdale beach. She was splashed on the cover on Jan. 20, 1964.)
