The Marlins’ Trevor Richards throws a pitch in the second inning Wednesday against the San Diego Padres at Marlins Park.

MIAMI — On Tuesday night, the Miami Marlins coasted to a big win thanks to an electric offensive performance that saw the team put up 12 runs against the San Diego Padres.

Miami was hoping that it could keep the fireworks rolling into the second game of its series on Wednesday. Instead, it put up one of its worst offensive performances of the season.

Miami didn’t record its first hit until the eighth inning and went on to fall to San Diego 3-2. Former Marlins prospect Chris Paddack had a big night against his old team, allowing a single hit and one run in 7 2⁄3 innings.

The Padres finally broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth inning. Greg Garcia singled to right field, driving in Manuel Margot for the first run, and one pitch later, Austin Hedges blasted the ball out to right field, tacking two more runs onto San Diego’s new lead.

Starting pitcher Trevor Richards had an especially rough outing for Miami. In five innings, he allowed eight hits and three runs (all earned), including the home run from Hedges.

The Marlins came excruciatingly close to their first hit of the night in the bottom of the sixth when Miguel Rojas thought he had reached his arm out on a slide to touch first base just before getting tagged. But in a controversial call that required two minutes of review, the umpires determined that he was out, and Miami remained without a hit.

The Marlins finally ended the no-hitter and the shutout all at once as Starlin Castro drilled the ball to left for a 399-foot home run, cutting the Padres’ lead to two. The Padres remain without a no-no in their 51 seasons.

Miami made it a one-run game in the ninth, when Castro earned a single to drive in Rojas. However, with runners on second and third and two outs, Curtis Granderson was punched out by plate ump D.J. Reyburn on a pitch that looked to be high.

The Marlins will wrap up their series with the Padres on Thursday at 12:10 p.m.
