Two-time rushing champ wants new deal right away

Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott wasn’t on the team plane Thursday when it departed Dallas for training camp in Oxnard, Calif., and didn’t show up for the morning physical or the conditioning run Friday, officially meaning he’s in a holdout.
The two-time NFL rushing champion has two years left on his rookie deal, but he wants to get paid immediately just as Rams running back Todd Gurley did last year in agreeing to a 4-year, $60 million contract extension.
Elliott can be fined $40,000 for each day of training camp that he misses. And he would lose the opportunity to earn an accrued season if he doesn’t report by Aug. 6.
Speaking at a news conference, Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said that Elliott officially was late.
“We expect everybody that’s under contract to be here at camp,” he said.
Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said that he’s in discussions with Elliott’s agent on a new contract.

Okung was near death: Chargers left tackle Russell Okung announced Thursday on social media that he recently survived a “near-death type experience.”
Okung, 31, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, suffered a pulmonary embolism June 1. He was placed on the non-football injury list Wednesday.
