Green likely to miss start of season

-

Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green had ankle surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss multiple regular-season games.

Green hurt his left ankle during the opening practice of camp Saturday in Dayton, Ohio, landing awkwardly after cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick bumped into the seven-time Pro Bowler while breaking up a pass.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Green had surgery Tuesday morning and likely won’t be ready for the start of the season.

“He’s going to miss some regular-season games,” Taylor said. “How many, I don’t know. Very hopefully he’s back at the beginning of the regular season and it’s not more than a couple of games.”

It’s the second straight season that Green has suffered a significant injury. He missed half of last season with an injured right toe that required surgery.

Fitzpatrick in the lead: Firstyear coach Brian Flores said Tuesday that 36-year-old journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has emerged as the front-runner for the Dolphins’ starting job.

The Dolphins traded for Josh Rosen in April. Rosen started 13 games last season for the Cardinals after being selected 10th overall in the 2018 draft.

“Ryan Fitzpatrick is leading the way,” Flores said of the competition. “He has been more productive. He runs the offense very efficiently. He has great rapport with the entire team; he has a lot of leadership ability.

Luck still hurting: Andrew Luck’s injured left leg isn’t getting any better.

Luck missed Colts practice Tuesday after telling coaches his strained calf felt worse following the first week of training camp. Coach Frank Reich announced Luck would be sidelined at least three more days and would miss next week’s preseason opener against the Bills in Buffalo, N.Y.

“I’ve made progress ever since I started working on this issue, but the progress wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough,” Luck said.

The Colts have been playing it safe with Luck ever since he initially got hurt in the spring.

Collier suffers injury: Seahawks first-round pick L.J. Collier was carted off the practice field Tuesday with a right leg injury.

He was rushing the passer during a team session when he grabbed at his lower leg. The team didn’t offer specifics on the injury after practice.

Collier briefly was attended to on the field before limping off and eventually needing a cart to get back to the locker room. Trainers appeared to look at Collier’s ankle.

Elliott, Cowboys facing suit: A man who was involved in a car accident with Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott in January 2017 sued the team and Elliott for $20 million, TMZ.com reported.

The suit filed by Ronnie Hill alleges that the Cowboys conspired with Frisco (Texas) Police “to cover up the details of the wreck at the time.”
