International soccer star Lionel Messi will not travel to Miami with FC Barcelona after all. The Argentine forward injured his calf during a training session on Monday and has been ruled out for Barcelona’s two upcoming games against SSC Napoli on American soil, according to multiple reports. LaLiga-Serie A Cup, the twogame series between Barcelona and Napoli, will take place at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday and Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday.

“Messi withdrew from the session due to discomfort in his right leg,” Barcelona said in a statement. “Tests carried out have diagnosed a grade one calf strain. Messi will remain in Barcelona and will now not travel to the USA for the club’s tour. His availability to come back to action will be dictated by his recovery from the injury.”

Barcelona previously announced that Messi, along with the entire first team would be traveling for the two matches. Marquee teammates in Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Frankie de Jong are still expected to make the trip.

The two-game series will feature two of the most successful franchises in their respective leagues. Barcelona is a 26-time LaLiga champion and five-time UEFA Champions League champion. It holds the league record for most Copa del Rey (30) and Supercopa de España (13) titles.

Napoli is recognized internationally as one of the most successful Italian clubs, winning two league titles, five Coppa Italias, two Supercoppa Italiana titles and one UEFA Cup. The series marks Napoli’s first trip to the United States in 30 years.
