Rubio weighs in on the swiftly sinking Dolphins

Marco Rubio: Senator, statesman, armchair quarterback for your Miami Dolphins.

It’s no secret that the Dolphins season is not off to a great start — first a 59-10 rout at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens and then a 43-0 shutout massacre by the New England Patriots. Also no secret is that the Dolphins traded away key players in return for draft picks, leading many to conclude that the team has abandoned all hope for this season and is looking to put together a great team sometime in the future.

Even Dolphins players don’t seem to be on board with the idea, with the team acquiescing to safety Minkah Fitzpatrick’s demand for a trade. Finalized Monday night and officially announced Tuesday, the trade ships Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for, yes, another firstround draft pick.

This year’s season ticket holders can’t be too happy either, but some savvy football strategists approve of the moves to amass early draft picks, not the least of whom is Florida’s senior senator, Marco Rubio.

In a series of tweets Tuesday morning, Rubio asked his Twitter followers to consider “Which team is better off of the future? An uncompetitive 0-16 team with $160 mil in cap space & 6 of the top 65 picks in next years draft or a semi-competitive 3-13 team with limited cap space?”

Of course, Rubio isn’t the only would-be professional football general manager out there, and several of his followers disagreed.

Others were on board with both the analysis and the Dolphins’ apparent decision to tank the season in favor of the future.

Aside from those, of course, Rubio also has to contend with Political Twitter, which is always ready to savage the opposition regardless of what the subject is.
