Biles sets all-time mark

Simone Biles set the all-time record for most medals by any gymnast at the world championsh­ips by winning the balance beam and floor exercise Sunday in Stuttgart, Germany.

Biles, 22, won her 24th medal on the beam, breaking a tie on 23 with the Belarusian men’s gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, and added her 25th less than two hours later.

Of her 24 career world medals, 18 are gold, against 12 of 23 for Scherbo.

Auto racing: William Byron won the first stage of the NASCAR Cup playoff race at Talladega Superspeed­way in Talladega, Ala., before race forced the final two stages to be run Monday . ... Finland’s Valtteri Bottas won the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka as Mercedes wrapped up a sixth straight Formula 1 constructo­rs championsh­ip. It was Bottas’ third win of the season. Teammate and two-time defending series champ Lewis Hamilton finished third. Hamilton leads Bottas in the championsh­ip standings by 64 points with four races left.

Colleges: LSU moved up to No. 2 in The AP college football poll, giving the SEC the top two teams in the country for the 29th time and putting the Tigers behind No. 1 Alabama less than a month before the rivals meet in Tuscaloosa . ... Hall of Fame basketball coach Jim Calhoun denied allegation­s of sexual discrimina­tion made by University of Saint Joseph former associate AD Jaclyn Piscitelli in a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Golf: Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger moved atop the European Tour standings with a one-stroke victory at the Italian Open in Rome . ... Jerry Kelly claimed a one-stroke victory at the PGA Tour Champions’ SAS Championsh­ip in Cary, N.C.

Running: Brigid Kosgei of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 4 seconds to break the world record. Kosgei, 25, the 2018 race winner, bested the previous mark of 2:15:25 set by England’s Paula Radcliffe in London 16 years ago. Lawrence Cherono of Kenya won the men’s race in 2:05:45, one second better than Dejene Debela of Ethiopia by one second.

Soccer: Poland beat visiting North Macedonia 2-0 and Russia routed host Cyprus 5-0 in group play to secure berths in next year’s European Championsh­ip.

Tennis: Coco Gauff beat Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to win the Upper Austria Ladies in Linz. It was the first WTA title for the 15-year-old Gauff.
